On January 27, on behalf of Courtenay Elementary School, the Courtenay Elementary Community School Society (CECSS) attended a socially-distance version of the 2021 Community Enrichment Awards hosted by the Comox Valley Community Foundation on Zoom. Courtenay Elementary was awarded an $8,000 grant to install cabinets in the school’s kitchen.
The kitchen is a hub of the school, seeing use throughout the day. Each morning, it hosts the Breakfast Club, where kids can come in for breakfast before class. Kids can also drop by at lunch if they forgot to bring their own or want something extra, such as some milk or a piece of fruit, to top them up.
With the kitchen seeing so much use, stuff tends to pile up. Storage was organized on three large wire racks at the back of the kitchen, but their limitations were obvious: They presented a risk of falling over in an earthquake or if a child decided to climb on them, and their appearance was generally untidy. Objects seemed to be slotted haphazardly. The grant will be used to purchase a set of cabinets build by the school district that will span nearly the entire back wall of the kitchen.
As luck would have it, the cabinets have already been built and installed. All they need are the doors and some thought put into what is stored where.
Courtenay Elementary and CECSS are extremely grateful for this grant to help improve the safety and organization of the kitchen.
