Chinese Lunar New Year

This year, the community school society decided to do something a little different for the Chinese New Year. With the help of Masako Thir, the community school society the grade 4s and 5s how to write Year of the Rat in Chinese characters. There was a catch, however, as they learned to write the characters in Japanese instead of Chinese.
There is a big difference between the two.
In Japanese, Year of Rat is written as: 子年
In Chinese, it is: 鼠年
We decided that the Japanese is simpler to write and the two characters are actually those taught to elementary school children.
The kids, however, learned that while the characters were easy to write they were tough to master in terms of getting the balance right. That said, they did a great job!
The week ended on a high note with a dragon dance!
